Buying secondhand

(Anonymous) 2018-09-04 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What kind of things do you buy used, if any? Do you find them on Ebay, garage sales, flea markets?

I buy about half of my clothes and most of my books used. The local secondhand shops and flea markets rarely have anything good, so I mostly buy stuff online.

Books, CDs, DVDs, jewelry sometimes clothing/shoes. I usually hit Amazon, but I've found some nice things at thrift stores too.

Furniture. Even IKEA furniture. Why pay full price when someone who's moving is getting rid of the same thing that's hardly been used?

Books, books, books, books. Some clothes (like coats or sweaters), some appliances, cars, knick-knacks, furniture.

Books and DVDs! And if I find a cool game or toy (for either my son or something to collect for myself) then that too. =3

Books and dolls. I used to buy secondhand clothing as well, but I can't find anything decent and affordable in the thrift shops anymore.

My mom and I like to go out yard saling every weekend when we can afford to, and I'd guess that at least 70% of my own possessions came from either yard sales or thrift stores. At the very least the majority of my books, clothes, knick-knacks and DVDs were acquired this way. I've also gotten a fair few video games, My Little Ponies, other dolls/action figures, horse tack/grooming supplies, other pet supplies, house plants, furniture and kitchen stuff that way, too. I've also managed to make money by reselling some of what I buy on eBay, like the time I got an old English saddle for $50 and managed to clean it up and sell it for $150, or all of the vintage video games I've bought for a quarter and sold for $20+.

I've also gotten some truly beloved pets at yard sales. One was a dachshund my family named Bongo (but we mostly called him either Wheezy or Slug) who was one of the best dogs I've ever met, right up until he died of lung cancer in 2008. The other was my cat Maxwell (seen in my icon), who I got one week before Bongo died. He and his siblings were being given away, and I asked the owner if they had any female kittens, who told me they were in the back of the crate. As soon as the crate door was opened, however, Max jumped into my arms and started headbutting me and purring like a motor. Never even saw what his sisters looked like. He was such a wonderful cat and I was incredibly lucky to have him. Unfortunately, he developed diabetes a few years ago and passed away after going into renal failure at the end of this past May. I'm still having a tough time dealing with his loss, especially since it happened so soon after losing my horse, Sharif. I wouldn't trade the time I had with any of them for anything, though.

Nearly all my shirts come from thrift stores. I have less luck finding shorts/pants in the right size, so they're generally new. Books are bought secondhand unless:

* it's something I want right away
* I want to support the author directly
* it's something that's unlikely to turn up on the used books market, like recent non-fiction and history.

Books (they rarely have what I want in local stores since I'm not in an English-speaking country); usually ebay, or abebooks. Only very rarely had a problem where something was either far more damaged than stated or the wrong edition - and one memorable case where the book simply smelled LIKE DEATH. The sellers just refunded me without any bother.

Shoes: ebay as well; found the exact size of a particular brand that works for me, so whenever one pops up for around 20 dollars or so I'll put in a bid and see what happens.

Clothes: mainly second hand and thrift shops in the area - I've never had luck buying anything like that online no matter how carefully I measure.

Pretty much the only things I buy new are toiletries, food, stationary and underwear.

that damn Muppet that shrieks "DOOT DOO DOO!" every five minutes over the PA at the Grocery Outlet. If I worked there and had to hear that fucking Muppet for eight hours a day I'd lose it. (never thought I could hate any Muppet that wasn't Elmo but I was wrong....)

Driving. I don't get how people enjoy it. Every minute driving is stressful to me.

I hate having my hair washed when I'm going to get it cut. I always wash it before so they don't have to wash it at the salon.

Would anybody be interested in this

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2018-09-05 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
So in this discord server I'm on some of us started talking about the idea of making some dreamwidth communities for either adult content, dark content or a mixture of both, just stuff that frequently results in harassment on tumblr.

I remembered that today and that I was thinking on making some kind of community for it sometime and I wondered if anyone here would be interested in something like that?

I've had a lot of luck buying jeans secondhand. I got three pairs for $25 last week, which is usually what I'd spend on one new pair. (Feels like I'm always finding new ways to tear holes in the denim I own, so it's nice to get for cheap. :D )
