Well.

Maybe she has nothing unfinished in the rest of her life, but she does have something unfinished with Jack. Maybe that's just part of her afterlife and she'll see her other loved ones later. Maybe she wasn't in love with the man she had children with - they liked each other and were happy and both wanted kids, so they had them together. Maybe she loved Jack first so he's the first she sees. There are lots of explanations that aren't terrible.

I looove that first explanation, anon!

Oh, I love this interpretation!

My thought was always that the last scene was a sort of "reunion" of those who had experienced the disaster--those who survived and those who didn't--to serve as some kind of closure. I never got the sense that that was all there was to Rose's afterlife or anyone else's, but that they were there to welcome every passenger when their time came. Ship of dreams, and all that.

That was my thought as well. All of them were there, not just Jack.

ayrt

Yours seems like a pretty plausible theory, too.

Loving this thread. (All much better than doomed to spend eternity with Leo.)

The first explanation is how I had always interpreted it. She seemed completely content with the life she'd had when she passed away, so to me, Jack represented the life she could have had but never got the chance. It makes sense that, if there is an afterlife, part of it would involve giving you the chance to do all of those things you never got to do in your real life.

aaaaand...she leaves behind the people she really loved, bc forget them, right? :)

This is why the concept of heaven is a joke to me. God creates a robot Rose for her children and husband, to make them happy? Or maybe Angels play surrogates, for a dose of extra creepy. Heh.

Careful you don't cut yourself on that edge.

Personally I think the problems come in here when you try to imagine something that's typically been understood as being outside time in terms of linear time.

Of course, in the traditional Christian conception of heaven, Jesus says that people will 'be like the angels, who neither give nor are given in marriage', so the whole bourgeois/ nuclear family understanding of it is pretty recent and not intrinsic to it.

Dude, get your edgy anti-religion, misogynistic boner away from us.

It's clear you think Rose needs to only do one thing, and that's play the wife and mother to her family for-fucking-ever and fuck whatever she wants. Get the fuck over yourself and quit sucking your own dick and maybe grow up because you're exactly why people hate atheists.
