He didn't, though? He did care for her in his own stiff awkward formal way, and said as much to Will when Will stormed the strategy meeting.

I saw it said once that Norrington was a Lawful Good character in a Chaotic Good plot: his way of doing things was not what Elizabeth or the narrative needed, but it wasn't /bad/.

He literally talked down to her and treated her as not-a-person, tho. Like, he literally takes her deal to marry him if it means he'll do what needs to be fucking done because then he wins over Turner. He thinks he cares about her in his own way, but "his own way" is treating her like a prize he should win.

I felt like he caved in because he knew how much it meant to her, if she would offer him marriage in return. He knew she didn't want to marry him. That's why he let her go in the end. Norrington wasn't a bad guy, he just had some growing to do. And he'd done it by the second film.

No, that's you romanticizing him and trying to brush away that whole thing. Yeah, he got better. But it's because he realized Elizabeth picked Will because he treated her like a person. He got a huge wake-up call about a lot of things, in the end of the first film, and then the second especially gave him growth.

da- i think you have your very own preconceptions and trying to brush off someone else's interpretation by claiming they're romanticising is pretty ironic in that context

tbh I don't think he gave that much of a shit about Will

He treated Will pretty badly repeatedly in the first film.
