Nicknames don't have to make sense.

Sometimes Matt is used as a nickname for Mathew, though sometimes it is Mat.

Tess for Teresa.

Dell for Delores.

Phil for both Philip and Phillip (not Phill).

Jen for Jennifer (not Jenn).

Sometimes nickname spellings don't have logic to them

Jenn can be a nickname for Jennifer, though Jen is more common.

Another good example is Zachary: nicknames include Zach and Zac (which make sense according to [personal profile] ailurophile6's standards), but also Zack, Zak, and (rarely) Zakk.

And that's not even touching on Jack and Hank and Polly and Sasha and Dodi and Mimi and Ike.
