I have not known the anime has been already aired and read the manga ages ago plus the whole ending translation was botched for me anyhow (they married the wrong characters xD). However, there is a chance anime is not going to be a tragedy as the author stated they hated the ending and they done it as a response to publisher not letting them end (or something similar). The manga essentially was supposed to finish a few scenes earlier sooooo not really a deliberate example of 'bury your gays' . I do get the dude though - it is annoying same as deliberate 'queerbaiting' is.

DA

This is incorrect. The author has actually said - repeatedly - that the plan was always to end the story that way, and that external circumstances made her briefly consider changing it but in the end she decided not to. She's also said that Ash is straight and that Ash and Eiji would never have gotten together.

I am very dubious about that as well as she certainly said most characters were pan- or bi-sexual besides few. My source was Livejournal communities that had interviews with her albeit not sure on how accurate translations were. TVTropes seems to have few of those but not the specific ones I seen, however does confirm Ash was definitely bi (I think Eiji was nothing in specific or just Ash-centred) as he was first in love with a girl who died pre-manga and later Eiji (and that was canon-canon just mentioned more explicitly in extra materials). Then again, I do not doubt that someone could have translated Ash as straight as first translation I read had Sing and Eiji get together (and Sing married a different character xD and a woman) - someone on fandomsecrets corrected me as been deadly convinced that happened.

That is pretty interesting and I do recall the River part being what pushed her to the ending but there was more interviews where she said precisely the opposite besides the Ash and Eiji not being sexual due to Ash's past during the manga but in good ending she went with 'maybe after they lived together'. Those ones were linked on TVTropes and I'll look for the one I specifically had in mind but it centred around Eiji more. To be fair, I also remember her changing mind a lot about the story after she was done so could be why there is plenty of difference, unless that is most recent one (now need to see which one is XD). Alas, thanks anon for finding that.

No, she didn't. She said partly she killed Ash because of River Phoenix's death affecting her (whom Ash was based on design wise) and because she thought as a "murderer" he couldn't live anymore.

I remembered the River bit and am going to look for the interview she mentioned being angry with someone and just going 'rocks fall, dude dies' - might be a total mistranslation and she could have meant she wanted the bad ending and contemplated good one but still want to find the source (might look through old drives as comic was on them anyhow).
