Has. Was. Does. Goes. There are reams of single-syllable words where the ending S is pronounced as a Z and every single-syllable word that ends with a normal S sound I can think of is spelled with two to make it clear (boss, mass, etc.). I’m sure exceptions exist, but my brain assigned a pronounciation to Cas based on observable trends in English orthography.

If people had been spelling it Cass this whole time, I would have read it as pronounced.
