As a person who suffers from autism (emphasis on suffers), the unilateral positivity movement makes me sick. If you yourself are proud of it, it’s not my place to drag you down, but I have a disease, a hideous embarrassing life-fucking defect, and god damn you to hell if you think everyone should just embrace it. If your autism positivity doesn’t account for the fact that some of us despise it, I despise you.

+1. I'm hearing-disabled (not 100% deaf but very close), and I have had Deaf Community Positivity rammed down my throat so hard I could just fucking choke. I hate reading lips, I hate the vagueness of the language of ASL (and my fingers aren't very limber so I can't sign well in the first place), I hate everyone that tells me that my wanting to get an implant so I can live a somewhat normal life is scorning THE COMMUNITY.

Like, if you're proud of your deafness and whatnot, cool, you do you and I ain't going to judge you. But how dare you vilify those of us that aren't? Who the fuck gatekeeps a fucking defect?

I agree. It minimizes the fact that not everyone has the same experience, that there is a whole spectrum of suffering and a lot of shit people have to deal with. Also sometimes people with autism have incredible pain on a daily basis. That's never something to be positive about.

Personally I tend to think that Asperger's and certain spectrums/levels of autism have always been part of the human race, and have offered profoundly helpful and meaningful parts of it, at times--also that sensory overload issues were less of a problem when most people lived quiet rural lives and could just go herd sheep if they didn't want to deal with people (generalizing but that's what I think).

I think modern day autism issues are exacerbated by systemic issues and extreme amounts of poison in the air/water/food. It's not normal to have poison everywhere...

There are some good things about modern world but there are also lots of shitty ones, especially for people who are physically and psychologically always going to be more sensitive to certain things.

I've heard of some grocery stores offering autism-friendly less loud/bright times for people to shop. I wish they'd do that where I live. I can definitely grocery shop and do a lot more than some people on the spectrum, but it would make things easier.

I get hating aspects of it, but I understand the positivity thing, too—basically, no it’s not fun, but non-autistic people treating autistic people like burdens or annoyances and not people is worse. I’m not even sure I’m autistic, just that there’s something similar wrong with me. Quoth my psychologist uncle whose specialty has nothing to do with ASDs; “I just assumed you were brain-damaged.” Gee, thanks. I’m not proud of being neuro-screwy, but I guess I’d rather be proud than treated like a punchline. It’s just I’d rather not do either.

I wouldn't mind having Asperger's if I could actually hold down a goddamn job....

Thank you! All this 'autistic people don't want a cure' always rubs me a little because yeah I see where they're coming from but if I could CURE my autism and actually be able to function in society then I would jump at the chance!
