Re: Controversial Opinions & Rants
(Anonymous) 2018-09-08 12:44 am (UTC)(link)The birth rate always goes down when nations become more prosperous. Oh, and especially when there's a better chance of children surviving childhood, and a better social security for older people--so they don't have to rely on having lots of kids and hoping some survive to take care of them.
I think poor people tend to value family and relationships. If you literally can't be part of the consumerism mindset most of the time, if relying on family keeps you alive (and it does for most poor people even where we live), then you might think it's good to have another kid, another person to bring into the world and love.
Teen pregnancy improves the lives of some teens; they get better food, sexual abuse from older men/family members is more likely to stop, and sometimes they have other things like help with homework. It's a stigma but even a slight step up in the world for someone suffering can be a big deal in the moment, when it comes to survival.
I wonder if in third world countries there isn't a certain uplift in status that comes with having more children, as well. Obviously cultures vary but it seems like a universal thing that pregnant women are supposed to get better food, not be beaten, etc.
Re: Controversial Opinions & Rants
(Anonymous) 2018-09-08 01:10 am (UTC)(link)Those are some very positive reasons. I think there can also be an element of not just having someone else to love but someone you can control. If you're at the bottom of the socio-economic pecking order, having kids may be a way to have someone that you can exercise authority over.
The control issue comes up with sex, too--- on the one hand, poor women may not only not be able to afford birth control, but they're more likely be in a position where they can be economically coerced into having sex, including unprotected sex. And I suspect that for some poor men, being able to make a woman have sex on his terms is a control thing, "hey, I'm not rich but at least I can be 'manly'" (in the toxic masculinity sense), and likewise getting a woman pregnant can be a way to control her as well as having the kids to control.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-08 03:55 am (UTC)(link)The far-out Quiverfull-level stuff, that definitely is a thing that happens, but it's more a particular thing that specific communities and sects do, rather than a general truism about conservative Abrahamic religious tendencies in general. So I'd be skeptical how much of an impact it actually has outside of those specific communities.
There is a more general religious hostility to family planning techniques etc that could play a role, though.
Re: Controversial Opinions & Rants
(Anonymous) 2018-09-08 04:59 am (UTC)(link)It was usually the whole "sex outside of marriage is a sin" thing, and so the only sex education anyone gave kids was abstinence only bullshit because that's what god wanted, and told everyone that condoms don't really work, didn't tell anyone about birth control, told everyone to never even kiss before marriage, kept telling everyone that boys only care about one thing, girls don't like sex, they just want an emotional connection, etc etc. On top of this, the poor kids were never really expected or encouraged to do anything with their lives except maybe play sports.
So, because teenagers are horny and curious and stupid, they not only embraced all of this shit, they also just shrugged and said "if something bad's meant to happen, it will happen no matter what," and just started fucking around anyway.
Then surprise, surprise, there's a shit load of pregnant girls. They can't terminate their unwanted kids because that's murder, and so they got stuck with kids they couldn't afford or were able to raise, but they already made up their minds to go down this road, so they just accepted it. The ones who waited til they were in their 20s only did so because they just didn't get knocked up by chance while they were still in school.
The higher class kids didn't deal with this shit because their parents didn't like the abstinence only lies at school and gave them better sex education (talking to them, taking them to the health department, etc).
That's how it worked where I lived, anyway.
