141. You so miss the point. It's not about her beauty or her gender. It's about the awful writing and stupid character backstory. She's pretty. Maybe she could even act with a decent script. Nobody hates her because she's beautiful. Nobody hates her because she's female. She just sucks. I wish the poor actress could get a better job. Also, PROTIP: The more fandom wanks about how hating her makes you a bad person (racist, misogynist, whateverist) the more I, personally, come to loathe her.

147. Another point-misser. Nobody who identifies with these characters thinks they're a serial killer. Mostly we just sit around and think about whether it's G-d or fate or luck or some internal thing that makes us not be, because in some cases there are similar histories or feelings that make us wonder how we managed NOT to go crazy.

You don't HAVE to say anything about her, she speaks for herself.

Needless to say I feel vindicated in my personal stance just by her being on the opposing side.

I do think a lot more people would like Maya if she was a similarly hot guy. Her gender does play a part at least when it comes to the slash-oriented fandom parts. They have had that reaction to any female character who got too close to one of their slash-candidates. See also: Eden, Simone.

Agreed with the anon. I don't think anybody cares enough about you to stop complaining about things like misogyny or racism. Discussing these issues are slightly more important than your ego, sorry to say.

I don't think it's wrong to discuss misogyny or racism. I think it's incredibly stupid to confuse disliking a character that is one step up from being a racist stereotype (if that) with ACTUALLY BEING RACIST.

The portrayal of Maya is racist. The fans that don't like her are not, necessarily.

Look at it this way, would you go to America from the Dominican Republic through Venezuela and Mexico? No. But she had to, otherwise she might have missed some telenovela cliches on the way.

Racial stereotypes can be found in pretty much any character of colour on Heroes (or on TV?), even in generally beloved, "positive" characters like Hiro, who did start out as an otaku officeworker who didn't know when was not the right time to babble on about Star Trek (like during a murder investigation, dude).

There were fans who called Maya and Alejandro "the token Mexicans" weeks before the season started. At least a part of the haters is racist when it comes to her. Maybe not you, but some are. Look at how many people still don't bother checking what her actual nationality was, and just claim some random Middle American country. Look at how many people mock her accent, sometimes even her pronunciation of her own name.

But I'm tired of arguing about that. Have a wonderful evening.

She escaped to Venezuela before she decided to go to the USA. It's just not correct to say she set out from the Dominican Republic to the USA, and decided to travel through Venezuela on the route. This is just distorting the truth for the sake of ranting. But I don't think you care.

Discussing issues of racism and misogyny is very important. However, when I see 'discussion' of these issues in fandom, especially when it comes to shipping, people are more just to call you racist or misogynist simply for not liking the character, rather than taking into account why you don't like the character. That isn't discussion. It's wanking. We need more actual discussion.
