All right, conceded. My mistake. But all the same, the hatred directed towards the character is not based on the fact that she is female, as implied by this secret.

Depends. I certainly think there must be fair reasons for disliking Maya, but I have to say that looking at fandom at large during season two (and I'm saying at large, in general terms, not you), the raging hate directed at her for everything she ever did seemed way, waaaay over-the-top. Dislike her, be disinterested in her, fine, but when a horde of females (LJ fandom is largely female) express such a burning hatred for a chick who caught the interest of one of the hotties of a show? I'm going to have my opinions on that, that's all I'm saying.

Basically I just dislike the rabid hate. It's highly unpleasant.

Oh, agreed completely. Perhaps I should rephrase my previous comment: those were indeed my reasons for disliking Maya, but I think the large majority of Maya-haters have fallen prey to that weird woman-vs.-woman sexism thing that goes on when a female character invades a pairing beloved of fandom (in this case, Mylar).

Exactly. That dreadful need for women to drag other women down. Ugh! I see it enough in RL, seeing it practically every day in fandom ever since halfway through s2 or so made me completely fed up with this fandom.

I wonder, is it as prevalent in other fandoms than this one? I was thinking that maybe it was due to how many Significant Male Characters (and good-looking ones, to boot) there are in the show, because I've rarely run into this much inter-female hatred elsewhere on LJ.

I think female-bashing is fairly common in most fandoms dominated by women. It's in most popular anime I can think of. In TV shows, maybe Lost not so much but House seems to have its share, and Supernatural has it in spades. Heroes seems worst off to my eyes, which I see some people blame on the writers (they're sexist and can't write females! some people say), but on the other hand, Niki/Jessica and Monica are good characters liked by fandom (as you mentioned above), as are Claire, Elle, and supporting characters like Sandra, Eden, Audrey, Candice ... so I don't really buy that the writers can never write any good and popular female characters. People just really, really like to bash Maya and Peter's love interests. I don't know! I honestly can't see the majority of it as much more than petty jealousy. Well, as far as Peter's love interests go, I think he sucks the chemistry right out of any female he's in the room with, so setting him up in romances just don't really work for me. I was personally mostly indifferent towards Simone, and rather liked Isaac/Simone. But Peter/Simone? zzz.

Didn't Niki only become beloved after Season 1? And Eden after her death? This fandom is so confusing sometimes.

Yeah, Niki being beloved is news to me. I was always under the impression that she bored the fandom to tears.

I actually thought Caitlin was a pretty cool character, and the only quibble I had about Simone was yours (Peter/Simone kind of made my mind wander during the show). I don't know... these comments are starting to make me wonder if my dislike of Maya is some sort of insidious byproduct of being involved in the fandom. Maybe they've turned me against my own gender, and I don't even know it. (Does that sounds paranoid? :P)

Honestly? I actually think that might be likely. Maybe not with you, but I think it must have happened to some people. People saying the same negative thing over and over again in a closed community (which a fandom is), it's bound to color a person's opinion, or at least work people into a rage, like how you get a crowd going at a sports match or similar. Certainly there's a difference between discussing the problems with Maya's character and storyline (there are plenty!), and the mindless hatred that ended up coming out of fandom. I think that does have something to do with people being "brainwashed" a little.

But yeah, I'm paranoid too. :P

I'm not the OP, but I do agree with the secret wholeheartedly. It's quite encouraging to me to see that I'm actually not the only person on the internet who doesn't hate Maya and want her to die painfully!

I've been talking with my friends in private about the Maya issue for a while, but never really bothered to talk about it in communities (I felt the responses would probably be, eh, expected, and just bring me down). It's really nice to see some more neutral opinions here!

I'm the same way. I finally gave up on nearly all Heroes LJ communities at some point during season two. The Maya hate was getting to be too much for me to tolerate.

No, the hatred directed toward the character is based on the fact that she is female, and that she has interfered (or is going to interfere) on some level with two of the fandom's most popular slash pairings.

When you get right down to it, that's really all it is. Sure, her storyline wasn't the best, she cried too much, Dania Ramirez isn't going to win Emmys anytime soon, etc, etc, etc. None of that would cause the mass amounts of vicious hatred that's been directed at Maya.

Well, yes, some- one might even say most- of the dislike of her character does originate from that. I was merely saying that a group of fans dislike her for slightly fairer reasons.

Fair enough. My hope is that her storyline in V3 will be improved enough that some of the negative opinions of her might change.
