I wasn't trying to convert anyone. I'm sorry you took it that way.

It's hard to take "Jesus died for your sins too, whether or not you see it that way" as anything other than a not-so-subtle attempt at conversion.

She goes to Jesus Camp. Go easy on the brainwashed, 'k?

Re: TB!1

[identity profile] pwnmastersaurus.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't mean it like that, I meant it in terms of history. Jesus was a real person, and he did die, whether one believes He was the Messiah or not. Obviously I didn't come across that way and again, I'm sorry for that.

I don't have a problem with Judaism or any other form of reasonable religious beliefs and I would never tell someone that they're "wrong" to not be Christian.

It's one thing to say he died, but saying "he died for your sins" is another entirely.

Look, I'm not forcing anyone to believe anything. It's historical fact that Jesus died because He personally believed He was dying for people's sins. That's what He believed. It doesn't mean anyone else has to believe it. Whether He actually was the Son of God and actually did die for people's sins is something else entirely.

No, it really isn't. Do you not know anything about the history of your own Bible??

Leave her alone, she's in high school. We were all that stupid when we were teenagers.

Re: TB!1

[identity profile] alleykitten.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, NO!

Re: TB!1

[identity profile] pwnmastersaurus.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Why did He die then? What did He believe He was doing? I'm not trying to be snarky, if you have a different reason I'm honestly interested in hearing it.

Re: TB!1

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
No one can honestly know, it was 2000 years ago. But the books that form the New Testament were cherry-picked from many, many early gospels by the early Church Fathers, some 300 years after his death, and none of them date from Jesus's own lifetime. The people who were writing in his lifetime, and shortly afterwards, had many different views of him and his teachings, and they were also influenced by all the other teachings and ideas which were around at the time - Jewish ideas, Greek ideas, etc, etc. Most of them wrote with the expectation that the Second Coming would occur during their own lifetimes.

The factors that influenced the early Church Fathers included many things, from the spiritual to the political. None of them could genuinely known what Jesus thought. It's simply impossible to say that anything about Jesus, except his existence, was a historical fact. (There are some people who'd argue with even that, but I tend to think the evidence is against them there.)

So this is me being stupid again, basically.

Thank you.

Re: TB!1

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL no, I wouldn't call it stupid. I don't think modern education is very good at teaching people to question things!

If you think about it, I guess that's why all religions call for faith. In fact I'd say most of life calls for faith, as it's much harder to really prove anything than we tend to assume.

Oh, the delayed parousia. The rationale behind half of the demented shit Paul thought sounded like a good idea at the time. Jesus is coming, any day now, just wait for it, wait for it!
