Glad to know that the classic sense of Christian superiority and entitlement when it comes to absolute truth is alive and well. In case you missed the memo, suggesting people are responsible for deicide is entirely passe and rather offensive.

Latkes and kugel poolside for everyone who isn't interested in hearing about who died for whom 2000 years ago and why we ought to care. My Hillel figured out at least 20 mixed drinks you can make with Manischewitz, who wants to go for 21?

I didn't say anyone was responsible for it. I'm sorry you thought I was spouting off about "absolute truths." And for the record, I'm a huge fan of latkes.

Look, maybe it's me, maybe it's the whole Jewish thing, maybe it's just the phase of the moon, but generally speaking, here's a truism to take with you: when you suggest to a traditionally marginalized people, especially ones who have suffered and died for centuries on the charge of deicide, that Jesus died for them, it doesn't come across as reassuring. It comes across as suggesting that yet again, the Jews bear the responsibility for the death of Jesus, and that we, as a nation, as a people, as a religion, ought to repent of it. Now, you may not mean it that way. You may mean it in a standard, evangelizing sort of way that suggests that Jesus ostensibly died for all mankind. But attaching it to Jews brings up the spectre of deicide, blood libel, and countless other agonies that Christians individually and Christianity en masse have inflicted on Jews. It's always offensive. So I would advise you think a little harder the next time you suggest who died for whom.

And for the record? Jews had a special relationship with G-d long before anybody put up a cross. We don't need any help.

And after seeing the mess I've inadvertently caused, I should probably take you up on that advice. You're right, I don't understand how it feels to hear it. Thanks for telling me. I'm sorry I came across as having a superiority complex, I honestly didn't think that people would react so negatively. Thank you.

Re: 112, 118, N!F, TB!1

[identity profile] littlewings04.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
No big thing. Just learn the lesson and think twice before evangelizing. Generally speaking, it's really borderline offensive to try to proselytize these days. Most people, if they are really interested in Christianity, have heard enough about it to know what the score is, and presuming that somebody just is ignorant and hasn't heard the Gospel the right way yet and will come out of their ignorance if it's presented to them convincingly enough really flies in the face of human dignity. Especially over a medium like the internet. So take that as you will, but chew on this: I've studied religion in academia for nearly 10 years now. I can read the Gospel in Latin, and Greek, and despite constant exposure to it for years, I'm still Jewish. It's not that I haven't heard the message, it's that I don't find it applicable. You telling me Jesus died for my sins is nothing new, and it won't do anything but irritate me, to be quite honest. So take the micro level and apply it to the macro, and consider why you think evangelizing to people like that is ever going to be effective.

Regardless, it's your choice, but it still comes across as offensive and disrespectful on the whole, regardless of stated intent.

You're just lucky that the Flying Spaghetti Monster is forgiving. You'd have got some pirates sent after your ass!

Now that I'm thinking about it... I want pirates after MY ass XD

Bring your booze and leave the pamphlets at home. Come as you are, it's an all heretic, all infidel, all non-believer weekend down here at Chez Heeb. :P
