115 I have to say, given that the fandom exploded in anticipation of the movie rather than in reaction to it, and that so many people have seen that show, I was always surprised there wasn't more movie vs show wank. And I totally agree about movie!Joanne.

121 I think you're actually sort of supposed to but in an unsettling way.

123 I love them so much. They not only make me feel like we can turn this ship around, but they make me want to do it. Sadly, most of the non-Americans I know think they're puerile and a little lame, so they aren't helping us prove to our non-American friends that no, all of us are not insane. (I hope that's just the people I know, though.)

124 Do you mean the characters or RPS?

134 Funnily enough, when I came into my first fandom, HP, there were a LOT of active, popular, guys writing a lot of slash. So I've never thought of slash as being particularly female. Yaoi, though, I can see as being more of a female space. Just don't let them be snotty, and you should get along, but I see your point.

139 Yeah, you know, I think that she did so many things to those characters in books 6 and 7 that by the time they died I didn't care as much. Also many of them got lameass shit deaths that were not mourned within the text—Sirius, Remus, Tonks. More was made about Cedric's death, and he was much more of a character in the movie than he ever was in the book, never mind that he didn't mean as much to Harry. Lame!

146 Aww!

158 I'm sad for her, and also her mom, but if I listed all the people I was sad for in those books we'd be here all day.

163 I don't get it—what does Hunter have to do with rape?

164 Me too. It's gotten really dangerous, and all for a picture of someone coming out of a restaurant or something, whatever, and since they run in packs everyone has the picture. Also the police chief is an ass but that's nothing new. That said, ironically I think that the paps kept Britney alive last year by recording and containing her acting out.

n!s3 Who the hell thinks that's real?

n!s8 Dude, just hold on. You really can't expect the movie people to get with that until the Captain America movie. And since it's a HUGE ship in the comics side of that fandom, I'm not sure what you're complaining about.

RPS! Mylar is everywhere.

Re: 124 OP, a tl;dr reply.

Shortest answer: write what you want and search for places to pimp it out and ignore the rpf-haterz

Short answer: I find that the ability of fandoms to tolerate RPS varies greatly. SPN fandom seems to be up the arse of those two actors to some extreme degree, even more than the House folks. But Heroes may be too mainstream to go down those roads. That said, I've certainly seen other secrets about that rps pairing, so you're certainly not alone.

Longer answer: Also? A lot of people have a knee-jerk response to rpf that has nothing to do with rpf itself and more to do with either (1) hearing some bnf pontificate on the subject and deciding that only 'crazy' people write rpf, so therefore saying that one doesn't like rpf is a signal that one is not crazy, or (2) they don't get that rpf is fiction and about characters just as much as anything else is, because their barrier for suspension of disbelief has an earlier trigger. Or (3) they hate celebrity culture in general, but at least those people are consistent, and think that all the gossip mags and entertainment shows are horrible, too, rather than having special venom for rpf. The (2) people I don't mind either because I have friends like that, who can't read anything about actors because then they can't "believe" their acting, or in an extreme case have a hard time reading anything that isn't set in an alternate universe because they keep fact checking it in their head.

The (1) people, of course, I have no time for.

Thank you for the reply! Oh, I do know why a lot of people have a problem with RPS in general, but your second point is something I never considered, and a really interesting thought. Supernatural fandom (at least on LJ) is probably made up largely of seasoned slash fans who are in it for the guy/guy chemistry (not saying they're only in it for that, or that there's anything wrong with being into something for male bonding and chemistry; heck, I'm a slasher myself). It makes sense they'd largely be very used to many incarnations of fandom, and the various "extreme" ways it can and does go. Heroes being too mainstream is a good point. (Especially because I do notice a high degree of general-fandom n00b-ness there... for a lot of people it seems their first foray into fandom, in which case it makes perfect sense they'd be unfamiliar and/or uncomfortable with the notion of RPS.)

There certainly are people shipping it. But what made me wonder about that pairing is that there was an unusually large amount of secrets about it compared to how small its fanbase is. It seemed to me a case of the secrets:fans ratio being a bit skewed, which I interpreted to mean a lot of people were shipping it in hiding, not joining the fanbase.

McCall was raped and was often the victim of (or threatened with) other forms of sexual violence.

134. but it would totaly A-OK if the females were snotty about it?

Not at all; I should have been more specific. I was referring to those gay boys who wander into slash communities and loudly exclaim "you're doing it wrong!" and then set themselves up as the arbiters of all gay relationships as though their personal experience has contained the whole of gay male experience on the planet—you know, that "guys don't do that" when I personally know guys who do whatever that is, and never mind because it's a story anyway. This is not to say that my own slash hasn't been informed by my own friendships with gay men, and I certainly am happy when boys feel welcome in slash communities, which was true of HP and is true also of Idolslash fandom. But the source text in yaoi really is written for girls, so I can see a difference there.
