Is that reason? I'm still pissed. He didn't have to give it to Bruce immediately. He could have put the letter away until he was on more stable emotional grounds and then gave it to him but no he burns the thing to a crisp. Now one of his core assumption he had about his relationship with Rachel will always be a lie. Plus it's disrespecting Rachel since she wanted Bruce to know. How is it Alfred's place to erase her decision just because it would cause Bruce pain?

I'm sorry for the tldr, it's just that that part has really been irking me and I needed to release the tension.

Well, that's what I assumed the reason was. I suppose some people would think it's kinder to lie in situations like that, but to be honest I didn't really like the movie, so I suspect you're putting a lot more genuine thought into it than Nolan did!

But didn't you get the message of the movie--sometimes we need to lie to people and let them have their illusions to give them strength to go on!!

...which kind of made me sick.

Though much as I hated that slant of the movie, I had no real problem with what Alfred did, because I thought Bruce had been unhealthily building up the relationship to himself anyway, and there probably wasn't going to be a good time for it, ever, and it's not like it really matters, does it?
She didn't want Bruce to know "I don't love you as much as Harvey" because she'd be dead. Only someone sick wants the last thing they tell someone to be that. She wanted him to know that because they were going to be married and it would've actually come into play.

Oh snap, my friend was telling me how she'd heard that the movie was pro-bush in regards to how he handled the war and I was all "no way, man!" But the movie really does have a huge sometimes-you-have-to-lie-to-people-for-their-own-good vibe. I so didn't connect that with Bush before your comment.
