117. I'm trying really hard to be optimistic about the wording here, given that I understand the protagonist of the book ended up identifying as genderqueer and not male.

134. Funny, I FEEL like I'm crashing a girls' slumber party in slash communities, every time. Six years in fandom, and it still feels like I'm somehow Doing It Wrong.

But really, any guy who goes to a slash or yaoi community should be prepared for girly, fannish squee, and if somebody has an issue with it... Well, they really shouldn't be there. Squee isn't automatically stupid, stupidity is stupid... Likewise, unrealistic is not necessarily the same thing as badly written.

I'm not going to look down on anyone for getting excited about something they like.

If anything, I kind of live vicariously through other (female) slasher's squee. Because not only is that sort of self-expression totally socially unacceptable for guys in general (I mean, maybe society might write you off, but you can do it), but I grew up under that sort of father who hit you harder if you cried and laughed at the things you loved just because you loved them most. Every time I think I've moved past that, I find another hang-up to trip over. Some emotions I can express easily, others (like just general enjoyment) I find I automatically suppress somewhat, no matter how strongly I feel. It's nice to go somewhere where people don't feel like they're failures for saying what they like.

Anyway, I tend to fly under the radar as much as possible. I dunno, some people might be MORE freaked out if they found that someone they'd be seeing around for weeks was a guy, but most people seem to find it easier that way. Like, if you couldn't tell until I said something, I'm probably not a threat to The Way Things Operate.

157. Aw, I'd been under the impression that this had gotten retconned at some point. Man.

What I meant was that, after reading the book, I realized that Jess' (butch, genderqueer) masculine woobiness pushed the same mental buttons as some of my favorite slash objects' (male) masculine woobiness, and that it was the ability to evoke this sort of emotional reaction that I valued most in the slash I was reading.
