[Jane Austen, Mansfield Park]

I agree, OP!

Good heavens. I bought a Jane Austen colouring calendar and the artist totally ripped off this picture for the MP month, without credit. I wonder how many others she "re-purposed?"

Mary lost my sympathy when she encouraged Henry to propose to Fanny while knowing full well that he'd get bored with her. She's attractive all right, but heartless.

Wait, is this fan art, or a published illustration? I feel like ripping off published illustrations could be a legal issue, but probably not with fan art. So now I'm wondering if many people copy fan art for their own things that they want to publish just because it's safe?

Also, is it a picture of something that actually happened in the book (in which case, I could see two artists making similar images of it).

It's this one (sorry, can't be botherered to photograph it and make an imgur account.)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Classic-Coloring-Austen-Calendar-Calendars/dp/1419727095/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1536449608&sr=8-1&keywords=jane+austen+calendar

Click on "all six images", then on the back cover image, and it's second thumbnail down on the left. It's like enough, imo!

Not that it's a copyright issue - the illustration that the OP shows must be over a century old. It's just... a bit naff not to acknowledge it!

First, you don't need to make an imgur account to use it. Just upload your pics and copy the url. Second...I don't think it's the same artwork? They both feature a lady playing the harp, but the one in the secret has a man watching in the foreground and the calendar version doesn't? Look more closely. It's like ayrt - the similarities are because it's a scene from the book.

I had no idea about imgur! Thanks, will try it next time.

But the artwork is very similar - the calendar artist has cropped the man out, and simplified it for colouring, but otherwise it's almost identical. I spent hours colouring that one in, too! I wonder how many other picture she re-used.

I feel obscurely cheated. >:-[

The illustration is by C.E. Brock, from over 100 years ago. He did gorgeous color illustrations for Austen's books.

Don't know about the legal issues, as I'm not as up on copyright law on art as I am for writing.

Wow. Was it supposed to be her own work, or implied as such? I'd ask her about it. It may be in the public domain because it's an old illustration, but it's still pretty crappy to take free artwork and sell it while implying that it's your own stuff.
