What basic life skills have you not mastered yet?

(Anonymous) 2018-09-08 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you working on it, or do you plan to improve?

Can't drive; can't knit; can't fold a fitted sheet.

Not working on it; huh, due to have my annual attempt soon which will probably end in tears and frustration, again; OMG WHYYYYYYY I keep trying every week after laundry day and IT NEVER IS THE SAME WTF.

I've found that youtube videos help with my knitting. I'm a visual learner so watching someone is easier to follow than written instructions or having someone try and explain it to me.

knitting is considered basic? not very many people do it.

It's considered basic where I live; every year, out come the needles and everyone's making their new scarves and gloves and hats and crocheting endless series of small little shapes to put on shelves so you can put trinkets on top of and hide again. It's a bit insane. With the family and friends 'round Christmas time, I give everyone books and get knitwear in return. The other day my 5-year-old nephew gave me a finger-knit little necklace thing, and I had a bit of a shock that it's no longer just my siblings or my classmates who are ahead of me in this, there's a whole new generation of knitters developing ...

In a town that's pretty much an Austrian postcard.

*pat pat pat*
My mom taught me to fold fitted sheets, and it's all about putting the corners on your hands and then on each other.

This vid shows you perfectly. Works best when you have a bed or table to lay it on at the end - doing it while holding it up in the air so as not to get cat hair all over it is very difficult.

OMG that video. The first time I saw it, I was all "Oh, bah humbug, what kind of sheltered petty life do you live where folding a fitted sheet is the biggest challenge you face".
AND THEN I TRIED.
It's seriously frustrating because every once in a blue moon I do what seem to me just the same motions and it works, and every other time it's a mess where I do and do and do and it keeps coming up shambles until I give up and roll the darn things in a ball and stuff them in the back of the linen closet and hope to god my aunts don't visit any time soon.

Aw!
The only thing i don't like about that vid is the way she layers the corners.
I put a corner inside-out over my left hand, then put the other corner on that same side over my left hand, as well, right-side out. Do the same for the other end, and you have a sheet folded in half, with the corners tucked into each other.

Then you fold in half again (with a corner over your left hand), until you have a sheet folded into quarters with all four corners 'stacked' one on top of the other. It will naturally sort of fold the top down, and that's when you lay it on a bed or table and make it into a nice little square package.

The trick is just to get all for corners layered on/in each other, and the rest is easy.

Good luck! I hate when my sheets are a mess - my closet shelves are way tall and i can't reach or see up there, so folded is the only way to get all the sheets stacked and neat so i can climb my stepladder and get fresh ones down without a huge to-do.

Thanks for the support :) There are days I just consider ditching everything and using a hammock for the rest of my life. And then I imagine dealing with period cramps or a hangover in a hammock and think, nope, gotta have a bed nd sheets.

I can't drive on the freeway yet. Every time I try, I freak out at the speed and exit as soon as possible, but I'm trying to get better because I want to go to concerts and none of my favorite artists play anywhere near me.

Cooking. I've made some really simple dishes recently that have turned out great, then I had a cheese sauce disaster tonight and it's knocked my confidence a little. D: My partner says I probably overcooked the roux. It was disgusting.

I'm awful at talking on the phone. If I have to do anything "official" (contacting the bank, council, doctors, etc.) I will try absolutely every other possible way first before forcing myself to pick up the phone. I get so nervous and talk way too fast and jumble my words up. Ugh.

What kind of cheese sauce? And how was it off - was it burnt-tasting and acrid, or really grainy, or what?

Just a really basic run-of-the-mill sauce (butter/flour/milk/cheddar). It came out okay the first time I made it but this one just bleh. The texture was great (no lumps!) but it just tasted like overcooked, sour milk. :( I have a long way to go!

It's really hard to overcook a roux without realizing it, though. A roux can be quite dark brown, depending on what you're making. You say downthread that it tastes like sour milk...are you certain the butter wasn't rancid or the milk hadn't gone off?

Opening mail

And no, I legit got married just so I wouldn't have to do it.

Sigh. I wish someone would marry me and open my mail. But then I’ve also never mastered dating. Never even held hands or kissed anyone. So yeah. The dumb thing is I never used to be frightened of mail and then my mom got cancer and died. The first time I opened a $99,000.00 hospital bill I thought I was gonna die.

.... ??? Do you just have an envelope phobia?
How much snail mail are you receiving that this is even something you'd need a dedicated spouse to take over?
How did you notice the mail-opening skills of said spouse? Did they happen to be in the offing when something arrived? Were they carrying a letter-opener due to a stationary fetish that neatly complements your phobia? How do you get to know somebody well enough to see them open their mail before committing to courtship?
Do you do something for your spouse to make up for the extra hours of mail-opening around Christmas card season?
Is it just opening that's a problem, or does you spouse have to sign for the mail and answer it, too?
Were you traumatized by a tricky birthday card as a child? Is it just a painful reminder of all the years you wasted collecting stamps?

... ... I have so many questions! This is the most fascinating concept I've come across all day.

NAYRT but I’m the anon above you, and if AYRT has ongoing medical expenses or is in heavy duty debt for some other reason, it’s not birthday cards so much as “hey guess what you might have to sell your house to pay for that hospital stay ;-) :-)!!!”

(Anonymous) 2018-09-08 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT: Yeah, I saw the anon above me after I'd typed and posted that and felt dreadful for being humorous about it - somehow, I just didn't associate the word 'mail' with 'bills' but more personal correspondence. So sorry to those with horrible reasons to hate the concept of post :(

"stationery fetish" LMAO

Joking aside, I think my repulsion comes from being an administrative assistant and being responsible for so much paper at work. Mail is the last thing I want to deal with at home.

When I started cohabiting with my (now) husband, he went to the mailbox and was like, "um, this looks like a month's worth of mail." And then he did something about it. And yeah, that's when I knew he was a keeper.
