To be fair (and keep in mind, I'm not defending her) she kind of had a fucked-up childhood. Her family was orthodox Jewish in Utah and hid it from the neighbors by pretending to be Mormon. She was hit by a car when she was 16 and suffered actual brain damage, which apparently affected her personality.

Frankly, Barr's been mentally unstable (if not outright mentally ill) her entire life. I remember during the ORIGINAL run of "Rosanne" she completely went off the rails and into outer space as the pressures got to her. She's been all over the place ever since, going from ultra-liberal to ultra-right-wing. It's like she gets these ideas in her head and it takes over.

I think a lot people who knew her *back in the day* tend to see her as that somewhat "crazy" person who, despite everything, had a big heart. She was apparently pretty loyal and protective of the cast, and she gave a lot of them a start in their careers. It's why she had all those otherwise, nice, liberal, non-racist people around her trying to defend her and trying to help her with the reboot. I don't think any of them really realized how far gone she was at this point.

That's not to say ANY of this excuses what Rosanne did. As someone pointed out above, she's being doing and saying racist shit for years. They should've never given her the reboot to begin with given her recent history. It was always going to end up biting them in the ass eventually. It just happened sooner rather than later.

But I can completely understand a situation where the people around her *know* she is was mentally ill and thought that maaaayyyybeeee if they could get her back into doing something she loved, rather than living isolated in Hawaii, they might be able to pull her out of her downward spiral. I think a lot of them have "she's mentally ill" in their heads (fairly or unfairly) and they're using that as the excuse for defending her because they're not quite ready to give up on her yet.
