I think that's the point of those scenes. If not to make you sad, at the very least you're supposed to think "that's wrong" when he's treated like an object, and the show is on our side about him being closer to human than he gives himself credit for.

Yes, exactly! "The Measure of a Man" is very definitely arguing for Data's personhood, and it's a recurring theme even where it's not the focus of the episode. Data is a person. He's a person who is a robot, but he's still a person.
