Feelng angry and need help

[personal profile] philstar22 2018-09-09 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
My sister and brother-in-law are here. With their dog. And my cat is terrified. I asked if the dog could be shut up in a room, but my dad, a dog person, vetoed that. He seems to think the problem is my cat. I don't know what to do to help her. She's my concern. Seeing her like this is breaking my heart.

Put your cat in a room?

I did for a while. She gets scared when trapped, though. And this is her house, she shouldn't have to feel unsafe in her own house. The dog is the guest.

If the dog is bigger or can't jump over a certain height maybe you can put something in the doorway so the cat can come and go but the dog can't get in?

Oh, the poor thing. :( How does the dog react to your cat?

Do you think they would agree to at least keeping the dog in one room with them at night time so your cat can at least roam around safely at night? And how long are your family planning on staying for?

I'm sorry for you and your kitty. It's horrible seeing them stressed out and scared. My Charlie was sat upstairs with me when our friend walked in the house unannounced with two dogs, and just the sound of their claws skittering on the kitchen floor downstairs sent Charlie panicking and trying to clamber out the window.

the dog is fine with cats. She has a cat sister back home. She just wants to play and doesn't understand why my cat is hissing at hr. But my cat has an abusive background that I believe included bad experiences with dogs. So sh's scared.

Yes, thankfully the dog stays in the room with them at night (although my B-in-law walked hr at 3AM last night.

Being confined to one room for the short duration of a visit should be fine - you can train your cat to feel more secure and relaxed about it, but you have to reframe it in your own head first. It's not "trapped". It's a sanctuary for your cat. Ditto maybe creating a safe space for her in the common areas of the house? Like a small dog-proof fort she can retreat to if she feels the need.

This is why I hate dog people.

Sorry, no advice. I'm just really angry on your behalf.
