Yeah, true. Or when the promo pictures make it seem like it's a different genre than what I actually is.

I also finally figured out what this show reminds me of: I really think it feels like a very tame, not nearly as funny/smart version of the Oglaf webcomics.

Huh, interesting.

(a REALLY tame, far FAR less funny/smart version of Oglaf)

Oh yes, absolutely. I'd say it kind of feels "vaguely inspired by", in a way.

Didn't Trudy also have a series called Platinum Grit? I have this vague notion that that was RPG-ish hijinks in a D&D-ish fantasy setting.

I don't know that one but might well be.

I would say less D&D and more dada. That series was pretty weird, with aliens, highlander parodies, and evil zookeepers, with surprisingly dark and complex character relationships thrown in.

Yeah, I had only a very hazy memory of it, so I looked it up after I made my initial comment, and yeah, I was pretty wide off the mark. (I think the only thing I was right about was that the characters were overall more clothed than Oglaf.)

I saw a review the other day that made a good point. It said that Groening's humor is best in sitcom/self-contained episodes where the characters essentially do not change—as opposed to rather serialized storytelling where actions move the plot and change the characters.

(Since the plot was sort of thin to begin with, it's not surprising that the end product was so underwhelming.)

I think another issue is also that this type of "subverting fantasy tropes in a comical fashion wheee!" has been done for quite a while now and getting yet another version of that up and running while still being somewhat original a funny about it is getting increasingly difficult.

Or comics, where he was hilarious long before Simpsons dreamed of jumping the shark.

Oh yes, Life in Hell.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-09 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, yes, I think that's nailed it. I've only seen a few episodes but kept wondering why it seemed... kinda familiar? Only not?

(Anonymous) 2018-09-09 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't quite what I'd expected, but still miles better than (most of) the Simpsons has been in the last 20 years.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-09 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a good show, it's a shame so many people were expecting another Futurama/ prime Simpsons. Those two are some of the best American cartoons ever, people were expecting too much.

Yeah, I really liked it, too.

Then again, I twigged to the fact that it was a completely separate beast from Simpsons and Futurama by the end of the second episode, so I could kick back and enjoy it for what it is.

It's more of a straight-up fantasy story that just happens to have a couple of jokes. It's not actually meant to be a sitcom.

It's a pleasant show that makes me happy. And that's really all I expected from it.

You're absolutely right.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-09 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this was one of those cases where the pictures looked pretty cool, but the trailer killed all my interest.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-09 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a decent show that started very slow and that got more interesting in the last episodes. I like the characters by the end of it and am invested in what will happen with them. Its not as funny as it could be, but its a solid series. I think it's worth a try

(Anonymous) 2018-09-09 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a weird mix of all the worst tropes from the Simpsons and Futurama. The "funny" alcoholism and friend-zone elf got old so fast.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-09 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, this one is much better as it is. An action show about a badass princess would have been pretty dull.

[personal profile] liz_marcs 2018-09-09 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I kind of like the fact that Bean is trying to figure out what she wants and is trying on different roles. All she knows is what she DOESN'T want, which is a traditional princess role.

Yeeeeep!!

At this point I'm in it for Princess Bean. She's such a mess, but I can get behind her quest for identity. For some reason the voice actress makes me love her.
