I am baffled than anyone is confused by this secret.

If that said any other profession!AU, everyone would know that means the characters as that profession. Considering they use 'canon' instead of 'real life' they are obviously talking about characters as actors.

They went from talking about rpf to actor AUs and the rpf made people think about actors and that caused them to read "Actor AU" as being an AU about real actors. I don't think it's a super-common type of AU fic, anyway, at least not in my fandoms, so not everyone is very familiar with it.
