Agatha Christie

(Anonymous) 2018-09-09 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Why was Agatha Christie so good at coming up with plots and so bad at coming up with likeable characters?

Poirot is a terrible, stuck-up snob; Marple is a nasty, snoopy old lady. Even the standard middlebrow detective fiction intelligent-young-woman-with-gumption type, which has to be one of the easiest characters in the history of fiction to make likable, often misfires and becomes stuck-up or absurd.

I liked Tommy and Tuppance.

Same here! They were a refreshing team (Hastings and Poirot has its charm for me, but true teamwork it was not).

I was just thinking about this the other day, believe it or not. Even the more minor characters tended to get on my nerves, but I did enjoy the plots. It's been a while since I read Agatha Christie though.

Did you ever watch the Miss Marple tv series? =3 It was enjoyable, and Miss Marple wasn't quite so nasty.

I never did but I should give it a try. She bugged me less than Poirot even in the original.

Poirot is a terrible, stuck-up snob

The irony is that people loved him, despite this. To the extent that when Christie finally killed him off, he was the first (and only, so far as I know) fictional character to have an obit in the newspaper. FRONT PAGE, at that.

Also, to note, Christie HATED Poirot. She wanted to be done with him pretty early on, but since people liked him so much, she kept writing him. He was terrible and a stuck-up snob because she wanted people to dislike him so she wouldn't have to write him. Unfortunately, it didn't work.

David Suchet made Poirot pretty likeable IMHO

I'm sure he's a very likable man but I find his Poirot just as unbearable as the book version.

Supernatural

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2018-09-09 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone here still watch Supernatural? I stopped watching around S8 (I think the last episode I watched were the angels falling). I've been getting into some SPN fanfic because of this one Gen author.

Soooo, I thought about catching up but I am mostly only interested in Castiel and somewhat Dean. I can't stand the brother drama but I've heard it gets less common in like....10-13?

Those who still watch, worth it for a Cas fan?

I only started watching it three years ago (fully caught up though) and I'm still watching it because I love Cas so much. I'd say it's worth a watch as a Cas fan and there's been some talk that he's going to have a bigger role in the upcoming season.

I guess the good news is, I can skip any boring (Dean and Sam fighting parts) stuff that comes. Thankfully it is all on Netflix.

The boring bits make me glad I got into the show so late. Watching it on Netflix meant I could either skip stuff or leave like, half a season on as background noise. I do enjoy the show, but man does it make me want to shake the characters sometimes.

Banana Fish

(Anonymous) 2018-09-09 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who's read the manga 15 years ago, has had years to come to terms with its ending, finds the anime's graphics hideous and the new fandom's obsession with "but will they KISS AGAIN/DO IT IN THE BUT??!" disgusting; newcomers' horrified reactions to every new episode fills me with schadenfreude.
Newcomers getting their panties in a knot over spoilers are even better. Dudes. Dudettes. The series exists for over 30 freaking years. New adaptation or not, it's OLD and wayyyy past spoilers-expiry date for manga readers.

"get off my lawn I'm old and entitled"

Re: Banana Fish

(Anonymous) 2018-09-09 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like you should take a break from it for another 15 years, and people on both sides of the equation will be much happier.

So... you're mad the anime has a fandom???

Re: Banana Fish

(Anonymous) 2018-09-09 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, I'm glad it has a fandom now because nobody was reading it when I finally picked up the manga back in the day. I'm loving the discussions and fan content. It's fun to talk with old and new fans (though my heart hurts for them when they get attached to a character that won't make it out alive). I must admit that I like the anime art better than the manga art. You have to understand that a lot of new fans may be really young and/or have never heard of the manga. It might not be easily accessible to them, so if they don't like spoilers, they are going to be upset if someone pops in with, "BTW Your fave's gonna suffer and die horribly".

Re: Banana Fish

(Anonymous) 2018-09-09 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree. The anime art is way superior to the manga art. Overall, the anime has been gorgeous, though there's been lazy filler character art (faceless, funny proportions especially in far-away shots). But closeups of the characters have been really beautiful, and the art direction overall is fantastic. I've been especially loving the use of color in the series.

And to be clear, the manga still isn't easily accessible unless you're fine with pirating it. I know lots of people, even long-running BL fans, had not heard of it before the anime was announced.

Also, I'm not clear why OP feels the need to spoil in the first place. I generally don't understand the sentiment of wanting to blurt spoilers to people who are new to the series, how hard is it to tag that stuff? Especially if you're not active in the fandom, what gives? Just mean-spirited.

As someone who read the manga more recently but knew everything about the ending 15 years ago:

Honestly, I agree. And why lie, a significant amount of my schadenfreude comes from the fact that a lot of them seem to have decided that this is the new Yuri On Ice.

Re: Banana Fish

This makes me feel like I should feel more strongly about it. But I don't. As a newcomer, and someone who has been indulging in dark and/or slightly bittersweet animne recently, I know things are going to hell in a hand basket, but i just want them to run away and be free. I also know that's not gonna happen. I want Ash to avenge his brethren and himself, bring everything to light, but I get the feeling it won't come without a price of him or Eiji's life. Sigh. I just want them to be happy and not suffer and save all the youth from the disgusting corruption that surrounds him.
