Fanfic readers

Do you read work in progress fics or just completed?

Feel free to ask any questions of fanfic readers if you so wish.

I'll read actively-updated WIPs.

I mostly just read completed works but if a WiP comes highly recommended by a friend I'll probably give it a go, especially if it has a regular update schedule.

I only read complete fics. I am so happy AO3 has that option. I have been burned too many times by abandoned fics.

I'll read anything, me.

The percentage of long!fics that I keep liking until the end is small anyway

This is why I mostly read short fics.

It depends. For authors I'm familiar with, I read the WIPs. For authors I'm not familiar with, I check their track record for finished fics. If the author seems to update and finish on a semi-consistent schedule, I'll read their WIPs. If they don't, I'll bookmark it and read it once it's finished.

Fuck WIPs. Hell no. Never.

But I'm not a fan of long or plotty fic to begin with.

Mostly completed fics, but if the WIP looks promising, I usually check the first chapter and the authors track record. If the author has unfinished fics, I don't bother to bookmark the fic for later reading.

I'll read any good fic if it deals with my fandoms.

Both, and I try to comment on chapters as they come out.

I understand why people can be wary of committing to a long wip, but when I'm in the depths of writing one (and v. tired and the characters won't do as they're told) those chapter comments are a draught of cool water as I'm stumbling through the desert.

Query to readers: I just noticed that half the bookmarks on my current longfic are Private. Would that be people waiting for it to finish before diving in?g

TBH, the ones I mark private are usually PWP. For WIPs, I just subscribe to them.

Huh.

Then I don't know. It isn't smutty, so... *shrug*

I definitely avoid WIPs, though if they are highly recommended I might give it a shot. I rarely get invested with them anymore though, cause I’ve loved so many abandoned fics.

99% completed. There's nothing I hate more than reading this amazing fic and then... it just stops, last updated 2014 or some shit.

I will OCCASIONALLY read a WIP but the premise has to have me going, GIMME and has to have at least been updated within the last few months or so.

Yeah, i do. Often, i'll notice they were last updated in like 2014, but i'll still read them if they're a 'ship i like and a premise i like/the writing is good.

Of authors who are doing current, updated WIP - hell yeah.

I generally read whatever catches my eye, even if it's a WIP. Yep, it sometimes leads to bitter disappointment, but oh well! I've had less of a problem with WIPs going unfinished recently. I think it's because fic output in my main fandom has cooled off and the people still writing tend to be either more dedicated to finishing long fics or else just aren't writing long fic in the first place.
