Yeah, the bullying is very much of the "if you don't fall in line with the group you deserve ridicule" variety but it's actually a fairly realistic portrayal of group dynamics, especially for that time.

The shippy parts: almost everyone gets paired off with a "special friend" over time, some of them more shippy, some less. Some of the more shippy ones in St.Clare's are Margery and Lucy, who basically save each other from self destructing due to family issues and who support each other adorably. They move up a form together and aren't really in the other novels but it's still cute. Then there are Mirabel and Gladys, who are basically the classic tomboy/shy girl pair.

In Malory Towers, the main ships in my eyes are Clarissa and Bill on one side (ugly duckling turned swan girl and tomboyish girl who bond over their love for horses) and Mary-Lou and Daphne on the other (super shy girl who turn surprisingly assertive when it comes to her friendship and pretty girl who used to exploit Mary-Lou at first but was won over by her selflessness).

Damn those sound like good ships.
