It’s widely known that illicit drugs are bad for you. So for people to actively go out and try the shit and then get addicted? I have no sympathy. It’s like when the stove is on and you’re told it’s hot, but you still feel the need to touch the burner anyway.

People who get addicted through legal, prescription drugs I have more sympathy for, due to the crookedness of big Pharma.

...but... people get addicted to legal stuff and switch to the illegal stuff when they can’t get ahold of prescription painkillers/alcohol/whatever. Maybe I knew the wrong addicts but I didn’t know anyone who started out with meth or heroin or whatever.

A lot of people start out that way, especially with party drugs. They try it because they think getting high sounds fun or that it will make them feel good and enjoy themselves more. I know several people who got hooked on things like Ecstasy because they started doing it at concerts or clubs.
