The hard part can be that "easy to identify with" is going to mean different things for different people. Because we're all different. So something one person identifies with and relates to is not going to work for someone else.

I would rather not entirely or even mostly identify with the self insert than have to read a character say “I love you [y/n]” or whatever. I hate those fucking brackets. I just want authors to give them names really.

Oh I hate those too. I just stick with canon characters, whether I relate to them or not. I don't even like OCs.
