#2 is a good point and (I'm sure) not to meant to be insulting. Fanfic tropes are popular because that's what the reader wants. Their faves drinking coffee and flirting and complaining about hard tests, instead of sobbing ugly cries because all their friends are dead.

to a reader, too much originality can feel a little risky, when they want pretty people snowed in so they don't have to go to work and just get to sit around with their crush.
