Oh hey, my comment got made into a secret! Cool! I still stand by this opinion, by the way. First, I must admit that as a J/7 shipper, I am kinda biased against him from the get-go, but there is more to my utter disdain for his waste of a character than that. To me, Chakotay was a character with the potential to be really cool and interesting, he just...never was. Ever. He was as bland as dry toast from start to finish. Every so often they'd try to tack a new interest/skill/hobby onto him and then never mention it again after said episode, and like I said, Beltran was clearly not enjoying himself and was clearly only putting the bare minimum of effort into his acting. That's not even getting into the whole thing with him being a Maquis terrorist or all the racist crap the writers pulled with his Native American heritage (lol, your ancestors didn't come up with their culture on their own, it was white aliens who gave it to them!) and their egregious abuse of panflutes whenever they did so. Granted, Voyager's far from the worst offender when it comes to racist portrayals of Native Americans/First Nations people and cultures in sci-fi, but it can still be hard to watch without cringing sometimes.

Also, his "romance" with Seven might possibly have been easier to buy if he hadn't previously spent three seasons treating her like absolute shit.

If I remember correctly they hired a "cultural expert" for Chakotay who turned out to be a fraud.

That's actually really hilarious if true.
