didn't he play Bester in B5? B5 seems like a good Star Trek successor without being Star Trek.

I think something that's missing from the nu series that the old one had was that slightly cheesy optimism. There was a 'Kennedy in the White House' feel to it (and don't get me started on the fact that Kennedy wasn't really that great because I already know but that wasn't the real point). That time felt - hopeful. Like life sucked and the Russians were scary and there were missiles off the coast and yet somehow it would all work out. We'd go to the stars. Humanities dangerous enmity of each other would pass in time. There was a light at the end of the tunnel.

And I don't think nu Trek, or most movies being made these days, have that. They would rather focus on the dirty gritty reality and the dark corners of things and while that's not bad and can be fascinating it also, I feel at least, takes away from the naive and yet reassuring optimism of so much of old Trek. Yes, it was cheesy a lot but it was so nice to live in a world like that despite knowing better.

and yeah, I don't think QT is going to be the director to manage to recapture that.
