The Boss was a great character because of who she was, and what she was. She was mentor and mother-figure to Jack. The Cobras considered themselves "sons of The Boss" And of course, she was Ocelot's mother. She shows her scar as proof of that. She was not ashamed to be female, and she was still a great soldier. Powerful and well-respected. She was not a 'damsel in distress', nor was she a 'Bond girl'. She was The Boss, and that's all there is to it. Her character would never have worked had she been just some man.
/sorry for making that comment an (incoherent?) essay. I just had my wisdom teeth removed, and I'm still a little loopy.
