Really? I've been misinformed then.
And I don't think all cases of mental illness shouldn't be treated, but in general, I think as a whole we are too quick to take any and every kind of medication offered.

I don't agree with the extremes of the Scientology cult, lord knows how many issues go on within their buildings, but I do feel that any publicity towards our heavy reliance on medicine is better than none.

I think there are many problems with how psychiatry operates, and the big drugs companies have done a great deal of damage by encouraging doctors and health insurance companies to dole out more and more meds without actually also offering decent therapy (they're both important), but that's a long way from agreeing with Cruise.

In this case, it really isn't. It obscures any of the real issues, because it's just some ignorant dickhead spouting off the views he's gotten from his cult. There are people in the anti-psychiatry movement who know what they're talking about (and who are talking from experience), but the Scientologists just think people should go off their meds and turn to cult brainwashing instead.

I think there are way more people who need to be medicated for mental illness, or receiving some kind of treatment, than there are people who are overmedicating. I think part of this is due to the fact that plenty of healthy people take prescription drugs for perceived mental illness. But the more negative publicity there is towards psychiatric drugs and treatment, the more likely people who really need help won't go out and get it.

I went 22 years of my life without being medicated for bipolar disorder that was persistent and crippling throughout even my childhood years (I was put in a special education class and bussed to a different school because of the fits I had). You have no idea what it was like after I was finally put on lithium.

No, I don't know what it was like.
But I do know what it's like to have a crippling illness that prevents you from functioning normally, whether emotionally or physically. I may not have suffered as long as you, but as of right now it lasted for more than half of my life. And it came as a result of being over medicated, misdiagnosed, and seeking help...

So, I'm sorry for the suffering you had to go through. But can you see it from my point of view, too?
