I'm so sorry this happened to you, OP :( I don't understand why people feel the need to be shitty about other people and their enjoyment of a specific fandom.

That's why I mostly stick to a couple of people I know who also like The Thing™ and leave out all the rest... it's mostly for the better. I do hope you can eventually rekindle your involvement in the fandom and enjoy it.

Hi OP

Something like this happened to a friend of mine. Well, sort of a friend.

We were together in a small fandom, and they were always trying to get my attention, and I was a complete arse to them because I was super popular at the time, and it all went to my head. I wasn't spiteful, but I didn't give them the time they deserved, and I was very dismissive and short with them when they talked to me. I later apologised to this person, I even made a fandom secret about what a cock I was. They saw the secret at the time and had no idea I meant them, but we chatted privately a few years later and I sent them the secret directly. They were very gracious about my asshattery and took my apology in stride.

They then told me that in their current fandom, someone had also made a cruel secret along the lines of your douchebag's wording, making a play on my friend's username. They were putting on a big smile, but I could tell it had hurt their feelings. I felt awful that I'd initially done the same kind of thing.

I'm sorry this kind of thing goes on in fandom, and that you had such a negative experience. I'm sorry I was the kind of negative asshat that you may have encountered. And if you're the friend I'm talking about, even if we haven't spoken in years, I think of you often and I think you're brilliant.
