175. Are you serious? That's one of the things I love about Ten! The Doctor has always had horrible, absurd fashion sense. At least Ten doesn't pin vegetable to his lapel or dress like a quilting club vomited on him.

Sadly no, I don't know who fits where - I don't know as much about random deities and spirits as I'd like to. It's something for people more into comparative mythology to work out. I do have a few vague thoughts, though...

Sonic is obviously the North Wind, but he's always been that.

The Hyruleans - Link, Zelda/Sheik, and Ganondorf - may or may not be Shinto figures, but I only say that because I've heard their in-universe mythology apparently has a lot of Shinto influences.

Samus is clearly some kind of mother goddess who will fuck your shit up if you screw with her creation. See Pikachu from Brawl and the baby Metroid from her continuity. Peach is a considerably gentler mother goddess.

R.O.B., of course, is the tension between science and religion.

I don't know much about Shinto, I'm afraid. But Samus sort of reminds me of Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt — a bad ass, independent woman who gets scary beyond all belief if you mess with her animals. But to really make that work we'd need an Apollo, and I don't see one of those around.

Hmm... Adam from Metroid Fusion is the closest I can think of, and he's still a bit of a stretch. Still, Artemis fits pretty well otherwise.

...If Tabuu is Yahweh, I wonder what that makes Pit.

Well he's not exactly a Christian angel, is he? After all, he serves a goddess.

His canon seems to be a pastiche of Greek mythology, so we could look into that. Or we could go into Christian heresies! Personally I'm tempted to have him be Sophia's (Palutena's) emissary. I'm one of those people who just cannot do crack theories without bringing Gnosticism into it at some point.

Well, my other favourite is a riff on the common and possibly-canon interpretation that Smash is a kid playing with his collection of Nintendo toys: Tabuu represents Growing Up, Taking Responsibility, and putting away Silly Childish Things. Thus his imprisonment and control of Master Hand, the unseen child's avatar; Tabuu is the manifestation of that pressure from society to be a boring grown-up with no passions that could possibly be seen as childish.

However, Master Hand's childhood, his nostalgia and joy in the tales of his old heroes, is fighting back. Tabuu almost seems to win when he uses the full-powered Off Waves; perhaps, for a time, "Master Hand" hit a rough spot or caved to the pressure. But then, slowly but surely, his childhood comes back in force, overthrowing Tabuu's tyranny.

In this interpretation, it's a triumphant trumpet blast for having whatever goofy hobbies you like, and damn the stuffed shirts who say you shouldn't. We shine even brighter indeed. :)

Ooh, I like this one! Partly because I'm convinced the child's play thing is the Smash Bros. canon (at least in the original game), and partly because it ties in so well with video games, particularly Nintendo games (which take heat from all sides, since "serious" gamers tend to be so dismissive towards them), which of course Smash Bros. is just one big silly celebration of.
