121. I loved Nabari no Ou so hard! If only I didn’t find the two main characters the least interesting of the batch. Especially when they’re interacting with each other.

It’s really sad, because I think pretty much everyone else is highly entertaining (Raimei is my hero), and even Yoite’s SORROW is palatable when he’s interacting with Yukimi or someone who looks like they'd give him a nice slap with his stupid hat.

Miharu is awesome when he’s just being a devious little fucker.

126. I have the same concern with 13 from House. I think Maya isn’t particularly bad, considering the overall quality of the second season. I don’t feel any dislike for her, and while she made some big mistakes, characters who should have been written as less naïve or more intelligent made far greater ones.

Also, she’s pretty hot.

143. I was thinking of getting into this show over the summer, so I watched a rerun. About the point where the dude from Breaker High started suggested to the girl about dressing up or getting a haircut to visit some wedding, while he could remain shlubby because he's a guy, I was ready to punch him through the screen.

But I figured it was the character, not the show.

The fact that she actually went through with his suggestions bugged me, but I thought maybe I was missing context?

156. Yeah, it’s… really weird. Not that it exists, but the way people can get so completely invested in which characters are fucking; not only in fan fiction, but in the show itself. I wrote a paper on shipping in the Buffy fandom, and the amount of investment from fans (including financial) is breathtaking.

Katee was the best technical dancer of the bunch and everyone knew it. On the other hand, Josh and Twitch had raving fangirls.

Hell, she was in most of the encore performances. I like to imagine that she actually came in second, but they didn't want to overshadow Josh's win with their announcement of Katee's 50,000 dollar prize.

Well, Katee at least as ONE raving fangirl. XD

Heee! I loved both her and Twitch (their contemporary routine is my absolute favorite of the season), but Josh was just so doofy that'll love him forever. Him and his ARMS, HELLO.

If only the top four could have been Josh, Katee, Will and Twitch.

I've always loved Twitch's expressions while dancing; like in the bed routine and his contemporary one with Katee. And Josh is also adorable. His dance with Chelsie kicked ass, especially the final, face-first dip at the end!

While I probably would put Will over Courtney, pretty much everyone in the top six were unbelievable to me (and Mark and Courtney's dance to Mirah was also a highlight), so it would be hard for me to rank them.

What's great about the show, also, is that even if they don't win, they still have had more exposure and contacts than many dancers get after years in the business. And I would think there are more positions open for dancers in big productions compared to singers or actors, so it's not so bleak to lose out on the big prize.

Yeah, that's pretty much my problem with the show. I loved Miharu until he ceased to be a devious bastard; I never really liked Yoite, but I don't mind him when he's interacting with someone who . But Miharu and Yoite together are like a Black Hole of Angst and Passiveness. (Okay, Miharu a bit less passive now. At least he's moving ahead.) The other day someone wrote here in f!s that their relationship is like a long, drawn-out hurt-comfort fantasy, and I couldn't agree more. And it's incredibly annoying, even more so because there's simply nothing else to Yoite than his ridiculous levels of angst. Take that away and there won't be a character (which is why I'm quite certain that he'll either die in the end or we'll never see the healing process).

And yeah, it's a pity because I like the story (when it doesn't completely focus on Miharu and Yoite), I like the rest of the cast, I like the setting, etc. This is the only reason why I still read the manga.

121. It makes me sad to have recommended the series earlier, since I was excited over the art and the characters. I still don't understand why we, as an audience, should be invested in the Yoite/Miharu relationship as I don't yet understand how THEY got so invested in their relationship. I know somehow their connection is supposed to signify a refusal of their previous apathetic attitudes, but somehow they seem to be sucking the energy right out of each other.

To quote Michael Scott, I hate so much about what they choose to be. I try to watch a fun anime, and they make it... not that way. There is so much more life in their interactions with basically every other character on the show (who seem to have much more compelling stories to tell).

I haven't read the manga beyond the anime; I assume it stays very Yoite/Miharu-centric?

Exactly. The relationship is supposed to be a force that moves them ahead, yet it seems to affect only Miharu, and only to a certain extent. And even in the manga I didn't find the way they "hooked up" very convincing. Frankly, I don't see much chemistry between them, never did. (And I'll be crucified for this, but I think Yoite is a very clichéd character. I've seen this type a zillion times in fanfic and doujinshi, usually with more optimistic and proactive partners and less angst.)

As for the manga, well, the story goes on, interesting stuff happens every now and then, but sadly the focus stays quite firmly on Miharu and Yoite. (In fact, it even worsens Yoite's condition in a way that I couldn't help but find ridiculous, especially because it doesn't seem as though the author wanted to do anything with this particular detail other than using it as a reason to make Yoite angst even more. Thankfully it seems that the anime won't include it, though.)

Oh, I heard about that detail! It's pretty much the only thing I'm spoiled for (you risk spoilers when you're a TV Tropes junkie like me). I agree with you that, that detail aside, Yoite is still a really clichéd character.

The first, and only time, I got truly smashed, I had been drinking with two friends of mine. We had gone to high school together, but beyond being misfits we didn't have much in common. In between a period of blankness, I distinctly remember them clinging to each other on the kitchen floor, sobbing.

One said to me, "Naomi, you just don't understand our friendship. It is DEEP. It is REAL. You cannot experience what's between us. Right now."

I didn't really know what they were talking about, and then I vomited on their curtains before passing out.

Haha, yeah, that's a pretty accurate description of Nabari. Which is a shame, really, because it could've been so good, if only the author had excercised some self-control. (She should've done what many other mangaka do, drawing doujinshi for her own works. It's always for the better.)

143: I only have a vague memory of the episode you're talking and can't remember what happened but given the rest of the show, it there most likely was a reason for it.

Definitely start with the first episode of Reaper, it is worth watching. I'm surprised at the poster's comment that it's sexist, racist and homophobic because it's really not. I'm not saying it might not have problems but I feel that any problems are more due to the way tv shows are made than the way this particular show is written.
