You know, the majority of this could be summed up by "Non-credentials out of the way". No one cares about your alleged or actual Japanese prowess - this discussion was not about Yaeko or Hiro, but about Maya.

Also, two points: a) Yaeko's actress IS Japanese, I'd guess she knows enough Japanese to know whether 'watakushi wa' is a valid construction or not and b) on that note, that construction is, in fact, still being used. I'd assume the majority of your alleged contacts are in their teens or twenties, and to be straightforward, those do not actually reflect language usage throughout the population, or even time. Yes, the Kensei storyline was one of the most offensive pieces of shit to ever have violated my monitor, but the problem was hardly language usage.

I think I must not have expressed myself clearly. Of course people say "watakushi wa"--but they don't say it every time an American would say "I am". A hallmark of bad, student Japanese translation is the failure to omit the use of pronouns that are necessary in grammatical English but not in Japanese. Most Japanese dialogue in TV shows is written at that level; I loved Heroes S1 because it wasn't.

S2 is another matter. I know the actress playing Yaeko is Japanese; I think I've got one of her CDs around here somewhere. The problem with language use in S2 was NOT "watakushi wa" type stuff. Nor was it any fault of the ACTRESS.

It was a writing problem. A native speaker of 16th century Japanese should not have any trouble telling the difference between an Englishman murdering the language and a 21st century Japanese murdering the language because neither one of them would be speaking 16th century Japanese very well. It should not have been possible for Yaeko to mistake Hiro for Kensei because of a stupid mask. They made her appallingly stupid.

I don't know who you are to think you know how old I or my friends are. The issue wasn't ever pronoun choice!

Anyhow, that storyline was completely offensive starting from Kensei being white, down through the stereotyping, and ending with them making Yaeko so unforgivably stupid that she was the equivalent of a modern American girl who couldn't tell the difference between a recent immigrant from Russia speaking English with a heavy Russian accent and a time traveller from the 16th century who used "thee" and "thou" all the time.

I have a phrase for you: suspension of disbelief. You might want to google it. Adam's Japanese is truly horrid, but the storyline WOULDN'T HAVE WORKED without suspension of disbelief. That doesn't make Yaeko stupid, that makes Anders a linguistic fuckbend. You need to learn to distinguish between the characters - whose fault it truly is not when their storylines suck - and the writers - whose fault it generally IS.

I don't know who you are to think you know how old I or my friends are.

I can actually click on and read profiles, you know. And rap is even less a middle-age-people thing in Japan than it is in the US.

starting from Kensei being white, down through the stereotyping

That I can agree with. Add the raping of actual history with a pointy stick, and we're getting somewhere.
