The danger?

I'm sorry, but of all the reasons you listed, this one made me lol the hardest. I've lived in the NY Metro area for ten years now, and I've never once felt remotely unsafe. ESPECIALLY on Columbia's campus - there's more security than you can shake a stick at. It's not a place where you can leave your doors unlocked at night, but more and more, nowhere is.

Also, in the past few years I've gone back and forth between Bumblefuck and NY, and coffee and movies are not that much cheaper elsewhere, sorry. They're just not. MAYBE a dollar's difference in the movies; less in the coffee if you're at a chain like Starbucks or something.

More importantly, your school in East Bumblefuck isn't going to give you the same cultural experience. It still might be perfectly good, but you're not going to be exposed to the same range of things that you will in a major city. Honestly, I'd say that college is the BEST time to live in NYC, because affording things wasn't a problem until AFTER I no longer lived on a college campus. It's when your meals and housing aren't included in tuition that it becomes difficult to live somewhere decent and feed yourself on something besides ramen.

ETA: also I think you forgot to tell me your thoughts on yaoi. :)

Do me a favor and look up Oberlin College (or better yet, talk to someone who goes there), and then try to tell me I'll be missing out on culture. But I guess I see your point. It's a different kind of cultural diversity. I personally see it as being the best of both worlds -- all the art and music and culture, without the crowding/unsanitary-ness (yeah, SO not a word)/crazies/danger of a city.

It's great that you've never felt unsafe at Columbia, but I think it's sad that there needs to be so much security. My brother visited NYU and apparently students have to keep their dorm rooms locked at all times, even when they're in them. And I personally find that depressing (mostly because I really WANT to trust people and hate finding out that I can't).

And I would argue that my corner of Bumblefuck (Oberlin) is still cheaper to live in than a city. Most concerts, performances, and events are free or cost lest than $10 to attend, and tickets to see movies at the town's one movie theater cost $3. Not sure about coffee prices, but there isn't a single Starbucks in the whole town -- there's overall less rampant consumerism, which is cool.

My thoughts on yaoi are that I'm pretty sure I'm STILL not pronouncing that word right :)
