Culling Possessions

(Anonymous) 2018-09-16 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Trying to clear out my closet and I have two questions:
1) How in the world did I end up with so many things?
2) Why do hardly any of them fit?
3) How the hell do I keep motivated to finish this project tonight?
Make that three questions.
... I'll come in again.

Ugh. Material possessions are the woooooorst and I gotta get better at just throwing stuff away. Or just not buying stuff in the first place - especially books. I've learned my lesson on books, I now refuse to buy books unless I want to own them. If I just want to read 'em, I get them from the library. They're such a pain to store and move.

Yeah, I have to get WAY better at saying "no, thank you" when people offer me stuff. I still have this HUGE reflex to accept everything and anything I'm offered from back before I could afford things of my own. Baaah.

NAYRT

I have so much clutter because if someone HAS given me something I feel guilty getting rid of it, like somehow Aunt Mildred is going to know I donated that piece of kitsch she gave me five years ago.

I have been slowly selling the few books I could find after we moved - Maybe got 40$ for what amounted to over 200$ worth of books but whatever.

Been there. I've got plenty of clothes that I don't use anymore, but I don't want to throw them out, because they cost money. But I can't really sell them either, because they are old and out of fashion.

That's why I donate clothes to thrift stores.

You would be surprised how many people don't care about that, anon. I made about $800 selling my old clothes on eBay, and some of them were pretty darn old.

do you work well with noise in the background? I work fastest/stay focused listening to music, my roommate does better with a tv show she's seen a bazillion times on netflix.

either way, just think of all that sweet, sweet space you'll have when you're done. get angry at the useless waste our society foists on us. consider the people who may be able to find a whole new life for those clothes at Goodwill. revel in purging yourself of physical reminders of unpleasant times in your life or at the very least bad fashion fads.

Thanks for the suggestion! I found a Jeeves audiobook was mega helpful to keep from going spare but also not too distracting. Another shelf, conquered!

I love getting rid of stuff but cleaning out an entire closet can still be rough. Take a before and after picture maybe? I posted one to unfuckyourhabitat on tumblr, though I don't know if that's still active anymore.

My closet is a freaking disaster too, although I actually did get rid of a lot of clothes that didn't fit me anymore. Anything that was still good I donated and everything else I either turned into dust rags or threw away. Also, I have a ton of blankets and I have no idea why. It never gets cold enough here for more than one or two blankets, but I have a dozen for some reason.

Getting rid of things get FUN when you get into it, no joke. I've no idea why (there's always the possibility that I'm some repressed minimalist outlier), but I've done the radical closet cleanout slme three or four times, and I start feeling better aboit myself already halfway through.

I hope it turns out that way for you <3

I know how you feel. I am about trying to get rid of some DVD sets I don't want anymore. Plus other junk I've never even opened.

Motivate yourself with rewards? You'll decide on ten items, then you get ten minutes of fic-reading or a fun video.

Keep going until its all done! Good luck, Anon - you'll feel better when all that useless *stuff* has gone somewhere it will appreciated, and you have much more room. :D

Man, I wish rewarding myself worked (not OP btw). I am one of those people unfortunately that if I STOP what I'm doing, there's no going back to it again until I get remotivated, which could be anywhere from hours to weeks later.

Yeah, it's hard, sometimes, to find the right thing to motivate yourself. I do a thing, read a bit, do a thing, play a couple rounds of Free Cell, do a thing, etc.

My biggest issue is getting started, but once i'm started, I go 'til I'm done.

I have two totes that I haven't touched since I moved here (almost six years ago) and a part of me just wants to--without opening them--take them right to the goodwill, because clearly I don't need whatever's in there, but at the same time, I feel like I should just have a quick peek, but I worry I will end up keeping everything in there 'because'.

I usually do a mass culling when I move (and I've never stayed more than about five years in one particular dwelling for my entire life /military brat) which gives me a lot of impetus to just Get Rid Of Stuff.

Here's usually how I do it:

There's the pile of stuff I know without a doubt I want to keep. This is usually stuff I currently use frequently (particularly in the case of clothes) or stuff that while I don't use it frequently I known I will use it when the situation calls for it (Ren Faire garb, formal clothes for formal situations) or stuff that I might not really 'use' much but has super high sentimental/objective value (some gold heirloom jewelry that my aunt gave me for instance).

Then there's the pile of stuff I'm not sure about so I put it aside to think about.

The pile of stuff that goes to charity. This is clothes still in good shape that I never wear anymore or that doesn't fit anymore (I used to hang on to stuff with the idea that 'one day I'll lose weight and wear this again' but 'one day' never came...). Or it might be random household stuff in good shape that I never use. Stuff like that. Generally if it's been in a box since the last time I moved and I've never thought about it for over a year and never touched it because...sealed in a box...then it goes in this pile.

The rest is the throwaway pile. Old papers I don't need anymore. Clothes with holes in them or stains that I don't want but aren't suitable for giving away. Random plastic whatevers. I don't know. Junk you know you don't want and can't give away.

Go throw away the last pile ASAP. You will immediately feel like you've made huge progress if you don't have to look at it anymore (and it's gone so you don't have time to have second thoughts). Bag/box up the giveaway stuff so that pile can be 'cleaned' up and you don't have to look at it either.

Sort back through the unsure pile. You'll probably find that most of it is actually stuff you don't really want to keep either (generally if you look at a thing and can't decide in a few seconds whether you really want to keep it....you don't really want to keep it). So basically sort this pile into 'keep, giveaway, junk' piles and again box, bag, throwaway as necessary.

Feel a great sense of accomplishment!

That should motivate you enough to put the 'keep' pile back in the closet and then you can revel a little more in that sense of accomplishment.

Think of how happy someone else will be with it. Works for me.
