I'm with you, OP. I side eye people who state 'such and such film should be R because it needs violence and sex'. To me, a good film is about characters and story. The rating shouldn't matter.
(Also, I personally found Deadpool to be highly overrated and I think part of my annoyance from fans is that they go on and on about how great it is that it is R. I find strip off the fourth wall breaks, which were admittedly funny, and Ryan Reynolds admitted perfect casting, it's to me a very average film.)
