There’s an established narrative (both literary and socio-political) that country folk are honest, hardworking salt of the earth types who dispense folksy advice about finding your way by checking which side of the tree the moss is growing on and which mushrooms are safe to eat. Most country folk know that’s mostly bullshit, although everyone knows that one guy who went off to the city for awhile, but came home to be a mountain man and write a book. So the horror genre is full of idyllic country settings that turn out to be full of hidden danger and secrets, murderous cannibals and crazy cultists who want to sacrifice you to their bees.

Everyone knows that cities are full of danger, secrets and crazy people. “Don’t trust the city weirdo who says he knows where your sister is” isn’t really horror material.
