I don't get that vibe at all (well, not the majority of the time), but YMMV.

I always just figured they were probably sick of telling people "Yeah, I know it's not 'right', but it doesn't bug me" when people find out they're history buffs, so they get it out of the way.

(E.G., my cousin majored in English, so a lot of people assume she loves Jane Austen and all that, and she hates the classics. So whenever there's an Austen movie, people who know her background inevitably ask her about accuracy and she just shrugs and says she couldn't care less.)
