My grandmother was a genealogy buff, researching not just her own and her husband's families, but also the ancestors of each of the people her five children married, so growing up I knew enough about my family tree on both sides to know there was no royalty (or money) there. For that reason, found "You're secretly royalty/nobility and/or you inherited a fortune from a long-lost relative!" stories kind of alienating as a kid because there was no that way that could be me. The Princess Diaries came along when I was a bit older and could appreciate it as just a darling movie, though, and not a vicarious fantasy.
