I don't get this secret.

(Cute art though!)

I think (think) OP ships the canon het version of these characters (sorry, blanking on the girl's name, though the guy is Fix-It Felix), and there's a lot of gender-swapped f/f art/fic?

Calhoun is the lady's name.

Thank you! I was totally blanking and I don't know why, lol. All I could remember is that she was voiced by Jane Lynch.

NP...honestly, I could only remember Felix's name, because you mentioned him...and I just rewatched the movie last week. Heh.

I think this is a great idea but I realize that is the opposite of your point.

I’d say either of these characters could work as either gender.

queers

(Anonymous) 2018-09-22 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Cry harder, OP

Felix and Calhoun are my favourite het trope, so I guess I might've related if I hung around in fandom and saw this happen a lot.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-22 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
“Queers” tho

(Anonymous) 2018-09-22 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I know rite?

Like I don't have any issues with "queer" as a reclaimed term, but when its used like this, it comes off so rude.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-23 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, except you probably don't actually get it because often it's very much, "Okay but they're canonly gay and there's so fucking few of those, why the fuck do you NEED to make these two gay character straight so fucking badly?" mixed in.
kamino_neko: Kamino Neko thought a kissy icon was needed. (Smooch)

My main takeaway is that Felix makes a cute lady...

(Anonymous) 2018-09-23 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHA No. Honey, no.

I mean, unless cute lady Felix makes you feel somehow invisible in society as a whole? Maybe cute lady Felix really hurts because you live in a town where you don't know any other straight people? Or... or maybe cute lady Felix reminds you of the time you were walking down the street holding hands with your opposite-sex-friend and it made you the victim of violence.

In which case I am sorry, you do know how us queers feel and I'm sure it makes you more compassionate to the representation issues we face and we can all understand each other a little better and move forward in good faith.

assuming from the wording of this secret that you're straight- let's not use a slur to refer to a community you're not a part of, much less collectively as "queers"

(Anonymous) 2018-09-23 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Not really related to the secret, but I'm gettin' real tired of the assumption that "queer" is less reclaimed than "gay" when our acronym literally has both in it (LGBTQ+). We didn't have to have a 'take back the word' PSA campaign for "queer" in my lifetime, but I distinctly remember posters telling people not to use the word "gay" to mean terrible or stupid or inferior. I STILL have to correct people who say "That's so gay they're telling us to do X" sometimes (though I will admit less frequently now that I've moved to an urban center).

Queer is a more inclusive word. I'm sorry if that bothers you personally, but it is. It includes bisexuals and straight trans people, who are a part of our community. It includes pansexuals and asexuals and gender-nonconformists. "Gay" doesn't cover ANY of those other identities; it doesn't even include other homosexuals!

(Anonymous) 2018-09-23 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Nayrt - I completely agree about the reclaimation and inclusivity of "queer" BUT using "gays" and "queers" is entirely different from just "gay" and "queer", ESPECIALLY coming from a straight person.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-24 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
It -is- less "reclaimed" than gay, since gay is a neutral term that's used as an insult, and queer is a slur that was reclaimed by some of the community/academics.

If you want to include everyone, you can just as easily use the acronym LGBT+ or whatever variation you prefer, instead of forcing a slur on people who have likely been on the wrong end of that slur already.

And lol @ straight asexuals being a part of this community.

I'm more surprised at the comments here saying that art is cute. Super ugly...
