Aw, OP, that sucks. I've done a lot of exchanges and pinch hits, and sometimes no matter how hard you try, the recip just doesn't like what you've done.

If the story is on Ao3, you could do what I do: wait 6 months. If they haven't even bothered to give you a perfunctory thanks, take their name off it.

To be fair, even if they absolutely LOATHE the fic, commenting to thank the writer for their work is the polite thing to do.

And sometimes real life gets in the way, or the initial notification that they have a gift goes astray.

I agree. I've been there -- my fic was written by a writer who just doesn't write well. (All tell, no show.) But, dammit, she put a lot of effort into it, and fulfilled my request, so I damn well found a way to thank her sincerely for the story. As you say, it's the polite thing to do.
