Movie or series

Would you rather see your favorite book turned into a movie or a tv series? "Keep your hands off it" is also a valid answer.

I think my favorite could work well as a movie.

TV series. That generally means more fleshed out story lines and characterization. Also, a bigger fandom.

There are very few books I'd like to see made into movies, but I'm kind of fond of a mini-series treatment of 6-12 episodes (depending on how much material there is) either per book in a series or as a whole (once again, depending on how much material there is).

In general I'm mostly pro adaption, cause even a mediocre to bad one usually bring a few more people into the original fandom and gif sets and edits can be made more easily.

I was going to say an 8-episode miniseries for my fave book. It wouldn't really work as a movie, and I hate how some TV shows go on for fifty million episodes. Miniseries is perfect.

Also co-signing being pro-adaptation. Even if I don't like it, I'm also intrigued to see what other people take away from the source material/how different directors frame different parts/etc.

Mostly, I don't want an adaptation because I've been disappointed so far. It would really depend on what kind of movie/tv series. Generally, I would like a TV series to have time to explore the book. But I don't want it to drag forever if it's popular so I'd rather have a mini-series or a tv series with a definite endgame built-in from the beginning. Also, I would want a high budget. There's no point in adapting it if the CGI looks like shit - I want to see the fantastical worlds! So, it would have to be an HBO-style show.

Both is good. I'd prefer BBC mini series, at least a four latter. I mean even a short book like A Little Princess benefited from this format.

TV series, just in terms of the length and tempo required for doing justice to most of the books that I love. There are some that would work as a movie - for instance, I think you could make a really grand movie out of a lot of Tim Powers novels. But most things, there's a certain amount of complexity and length where it requires the pace of a TV series to get it all in there in a form that makes sense.

I'm never totally anti-adaptation. I always kind of think of it like... no matter how bad an adaptation is, the original version will still be there just the same. So the worst case scenario for an adaptation is that it's useless, and I just never watch it.

TV series. You could never capture enough of the Silmarillion in one movie or even three.

Film. It's too short and too thematically dense to work as a series.

ETA: Victorian Romance Emma is not my favourite ever but certainly in the top five, and badly needs to be a BBC series.

Keep your hands off it!

Netflix is in the process of ruining one of my favourite book series but I've made my peace with it. I just won't bother to watch and won't engage with anyone who wants to talk to me about it. The source material will stay the same and I can still love it and participate in that fandom. The Netflix show will have its own fandom that I will just avoid.

You gotta tell us what book

The Witcher. And they're doing some weird combination of the books and the games (or just the last game?) where the characters are based on the books but the events are based on the game(s). Which doesn't actually work since they switched some of the characters around for the games. Idk. I never wanted another live action adaptation but whatever.

NAYRT, but I didn't even know the games were based on books. I don't play the games, but they are sort of all over the internet so it's hard to not know they exist at least, lol!

Are there a lot of books?

Can I guess A Series of Unfortunate Events? (I never read them, so I have no horse in this race.)

A TV series of Hyperion is supposedly in the works already, so I'll be greedy and ask for a series of C L Polk's Witchmark as well.

I would have preferred a Harry Potter series to a movie tbh. More time so there's no excuse to cut out important shit and flatten characters. Also the possibility of exploring other characters outside Harry's POV.

TV series for Harry Potter. Specifically, an anime series, because that'd be hilarious.

I think the Wayward Children series would work as movies (whether live-action or animated), but I think a separate miniseries for each book would be more likely to do them justice. Just keep Tim Burton away from them.

Speaking of Seanan McGuire's works, I'd kill for an October Daye TV series. Preferably live-action, although some of the special effects might be tricky on a TV budget.

There have already been several highly enjoyable Discworld movies, but I'd kill for a Studio Ghibli adaptation of any of the Witch books, especially the Tiffany Aching sub-series. The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents would make a good Ghibli movie, too.

The Please Don't Tell My Parents I'm A Supervillain series would probably work best as an animated TV series.

Chicagoland Vampires would make for a fun live-action TV series.

His Dark Materials would probably work better as a miniseries, especially if they didn't try to make it "kid-friendly" and blandly non-offensive like they did with the movie...
