To me the teams just made it more competitive, not more social. It allowed me to take over other team's gyms, which I could do all by myself. And, yes, there was/is some collaboration when I add my pokemon to a gym that has already been turned my color or when other people add their pokemon to the gym that I took over, but that team/gym aspect doesn't force me to be social. And tbh, for the raids, teams don't really matter that much. People grouped together for teams on community raid days, but most of the time I just see random people asking for others to join them on raids, and no one mentions their team. So I don't think having a team is as big an indicator as you think it is.
