if you're doing a raid with other people who aren't just all hiding in their cars and they've given no reason to think they wouldn't be helpful, why not ask? you can be casual and still know the basic typings. the ones the game recommends are also the pokemon that are resistant to the raid bosses charge move, which isn't necessarily the best choice in most cases. for example mewtwo had thunderbolt in a few of the raids i did today, so the game recommended i use stuff like golem, rhydon, and tyranitar since they are resistant to that being rock/ground but none of those aside from a dark type tyranitar are any good against mewtwo.

and again, i'm talking about instances where it can make or break a raid, and can result in premium passes being wasted. that's when i care. as in, either real money or effort from spending coins and 2 days of gym defense lost. any help is, of course, better than no help but a quick 'hey should i be using something else?' or 'can someone help me build a team for this?' can make all the difference sometimes.

ultimately you can play however you like but if you want to participate in some capacity in the group content, working as a team is part of it. if you choose to play deliberately not wanting to bother to learn any of the things that help with that, that's your choice.

edit:
from reading comments above i can see that your local group is... not great, so i can understand not wanting to ask. i hope you can find some people locally who are chill and encouraging, some definitely take the game too seriously. idk if it'd be particularly helpful, but i found a chart for typing weaknesses in phone background size and i put that as a wallpaper, since i still have issues with remembering the ones that aren't really obvious, it helps a lot.
