I feel this a lot, especially with so many research things demanding you participate in raids if you want a rare Pokemon. I don't live within walking distance of any gyms, I don't drive, the roads aren't safe enough for bikes, and there's no public transportation. I basically have one half-hour window a week where I'm near a gym, and the odds of there being 1) a raid going on and 2) anyone else around and willing to participate in it are slim to none. The local group is very cliquey and if you're not playing hardcore they're going to ignore you.

If Niantic wants people to play the game "as intended" they need to have better gym distribution and more encouragement for people to be friends rather than elitists 'taking pity' on casuals.
