I think fic archives are always going to be the best places for fic. The old fandom-specific or pairing-specific archives I remember were not searchable, but at least the fic was all there in one place.

For discussion, I do prefer message boards and journal comms.

Yes, but what is the point of it being in place is you still have to go through pages and pages and pages to find the one thing you want.

The point was you wanted fic and there was no alternative. Fic archives pre-date LJ. You gonna send away for a fanzine or something?

You hope fiercely that the community had a good tagging system to make it easier to find stuff than just clicking 'next' on page after page.
