The format is the same, yes. But Prue's comments are significantly more critical and less supportive than Mary's. Mel and Sue were more into silly innuendo (a fan favorite) than Noel and Sandi. They also offered a lot more support and feedback to the bakers about their food than Noel and Sandi do.

More critical is fine by me. She isn't mean about it. The silly innuendo is definitely still there. no idea why you think otherwise. They also seemed to be doing the thing where they support people by telling them it ins't that bad. Not sure what you were watching.

I don't know about that. Can't remember what episode it was, but for one of the technical rounds she exclaimed about how awful all the bakes looked. That wasn't particularly nice or helpful.

Wordplay isn't the same thing as innuendo.

P. S. I didn't say there wasn't any innuendo now. There's less of it. It's a question of degree, as a result of Mel and Sue's comedy style vs. Noel Sandi's.

Personally, I'm glad there is less innuendo. That was my least favorite part of the old show. That being said, I refuse to watch the new stuff because Paul is horrible and I miss Mary too much.

I enjoyed it. It helped lighten the mood for the bakers and it helped overall to not take the competition aspect too seriously.

Series 9,episode 4. Poor Ruby's showstopper chocolate sphere collapsed at the bottom and when she presents it to the judges, Prue looks at her and says, "Do you understand the words 'sphere'?"

That's mean and not at all necessary. Several bakers had troubles with their chocolate sphere, mind you. But only one baker got that reaction. Prue isn't nasty all the time, but she comes out with remarks like this that aren't constructive criticism, they're just unkind. Mary wouldn't have done that, ever.

Uh, except that Prue IS kind of mean about it.

Those quotes are directly from the show. Not sure which show you were watching to miss that.

I do wonder how much of that was just settling into a new dynamic. Especially with the change from Mary to Prue - Prue is more critical than Mary was, but I feel like Paul has also become less critical, and I think a lot of it is just finding the balance betwen those different roles. I do think it would be good if Noel and Sandi were more aggressively supportive. That was such an important aspect of the show. But there again I expect it takes time.

(NB that I'm in America and haven't seen any of the currently airing season so I don't have the benefit of looking at the dynamic there)

You're absolutely right about the differences. The new bake off isn't a bad show, but it's definitely not exactly the same. I don't know how anyone who's seen both the old version and the new one could claim there's no difference except for the faces.

I feel as though Paul's being (or being edited to seem) less critical because Prue is more critical than Mary ever was and the show is trying to find a better balance. I miss Mary. :(
